National Drug Facts Week

National-Drug-Facts-Week-LogoEvery day, teens hear myths about drugs from the internet, TV, movies, music or friends. Celebrate National Drug Facts Week and encourage teens to counteract those myths by learning what science has taught us about drug abuse and addiction.

“Our club members are always excited to share the knowledge they have learned about drugs and drug abuse with their friends and peers during National Drug Facts Week. We spend a lot of time practicing ways to positively engage other students in dispelling the myths about drugs, and we look forward to making the week a fun and educational time at our school.”

About National Drug Facts Week
In the past year, nearly one third of high school seniors report using an illicit drug. More than 20 percent report smoking marijuana, and more than 10 percent report nonmedical use of prescription painkillers. Many teens are unaware of the risks drug use pose to their health and to their success in school. When given scientific facts about drugs, teens can be better prepared to make good decisions for themselves and share the information with others.

Launched in 2010 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Drug Facts Week is a national annual health observance that gives teens the opportunity to shatter the myths about drugs and drug abuse. In school assemblies, athletic events, after school clubs and community venues across the country, teens and experts will come together to have honest conversations about how drugs affect the brain, body and behavior.

National Drug Facts Week is celebrated annually during the last week of January. Kansas Family Partnership (KFP) has coordinated the event in Kansas since 2014 and encourages teens, parents and teachers to use the week to ask NIDA scientists their most pressing questions about drugs and to learn how to use NIDA materials to shatter the myths.
