SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) 
was originally founded as Students Against Driving Drunk, and is a school-based organization dedicated to addressing the issues of underage drinking, impaired driving, drug use, and other destructive decisions and killers of young adults.
SADD's mission is to provide students with the best prevention and intervention tools possible to deal with the serious issues young adults are facing today. Empowerment is the foundation of SADD. The idea of empowerment is to build the confidence and ability needed to create changes and manage behavior in a way that results in healthy choices.
SADD promotes a "no use" message of alcohol and other drugs and encourages students not to participate in activities with destructive consequences.
SADD offers life lessons that will lead well into the 21st century.

SADD was founded in 1981 as "Students Against Driving Drunk" by Robert Anastas and his Wayland High School students in Wayland, Massachusetts. Two Wayland High School hockey players were killed in separate crashes that July, which led Mr. Anastas to work together with his students to found the SADD organization. At that time, impaired driving was the number one killer of teens, accounting for over 6,000 teen deaths each year. In 1997, in response to requests from SADD students themselves, SADD expanded its mission and adopted a new name, "Students Against Destructive Decisions."
The core of SADD is still the SADD Contract for Life that was formulated by Mr. Anastas and his students. SADD is the only national student-based organization that highlights prevention of all destructive behaviors and attitudes that are harmful to young adults, including underage drinking, substance abuse, impaired driving, violence, suicide, and other issues which negatively affect lives.

How to Start a SADD Chapter |
- Register online at SADD.org;
- Recruit participants;
- Work with or designate your chapter advisor;
- Organize your chapter, including electing and delegating officer responsibilities;
- Make meetings informative, interesting and fun;
- Ensure that each individual feels included and get the scoop on group dynamics in a meeting; and
- Plan fund raising ideas that are fun and profitable so you can attend the KS SADD conference every April!

KS Student Leadership Council (SLC) |
The KS SADD Student Leadership Council or SLC for short, consists of individuals from across the state that are ready to take their SADD leadership to the state level. Membership numbers vary and are competitive.
Application for the Kansas SLC is open to current freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school. All applicants must be students in good academic standing (no lower than a C average overall) and agree to maintain that good standing throughout their tenure on the Council. Members of the KS SLC must make every attempt to attend the Kansas SADD State Leadership Council Meetings and the SADD State Leadership Conference and other SADD related events across the state.

Kansas SADD Coordinator elected to serve on SADD national board of directors
Kansas Family Partnership is proud to announce that Kansas SADD state coordinator, Maria Torrez Anderson, is the very first state coordinator from Kansas to be elected as a member of the SADD national board of directors.
Penny Wells, president and executive director of SADD national, said, “Maria has been a tireless advocate for the mission of SADD, working to ensure that Kansas teens are aware of the perils of underage drinking and other drug use and... that they stay safe on the roads.”

2006 - 2007 National Student Leadership Council Representative
The first Kansan to apply for and be chosen for the National Student Leadership Council for the 2006-2007 school year, Tawny Decker from Burlington High School represented the state!

Kansas is on a roll! Stephen Winkler, from Nemaha Valley High School was chosen to be a representative for the National Student Leadership Council and also serves on the newly formed Kansas Student Leadership Council. Thanks Stephen!

The third ever Kansas student through Kansas Family Partnership to apply for and be chosen for the National Student Leadership Council, Marcus Kidd from Manhattan High School will represent Kansas nationally with the SADD Student Leadership Council.

2010 KS SADD BRINGS HOME SPIRIT STICK FROM SADD NATIONAL

Leadership Council (SLC) honors state participants
with the Spirit Stick who show their dedication in continuing to carry out the mission and goals of SADD at the national conference.
Winning delegations
must exemplify SADD, be incredibly helpful, polite,
interested and courteous during workshops and
speaker presentations, and participate in all conference activities. This was the third time the Kansas SADD delegation received the Spirit Stick.

The 2011 SADD Awards were presented at the Kansas SADD State Conference. The winners were Norwich High School, for Kansas SADD Chapter of the Year; Kari Quiton, for Kansas SADD Advisor of the Year; and Manhattan High School, for Outstanding Activity of the Year. Sabetha High School won the Spirit Stick and Wakefield High School won the T-Shirt contest.

The Annual State SADD conference is open to all high school students
(freshmen through seniors), and to all youth groups whose focus is
to stop underage drinking and the illegal use of drugs, as well as
helping to keep Kansas youth healthy. Students do not need to be a member
of SADD to attend.

Positive Charge
"Positive Charge” is a campaign combating alcohol, tobacco
and drug abuse with via social media, primarily Facebook. The campaign will take place during National Drug Facts Week, which is October 31st through November 6th, 2011.
The Kansas Student Leadership Council (SLC) for Kansas Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), came up with the campaign and wanted to change the stereotype that “everyone is doing it,” regarding alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
Here's how it works:
- Each SLC member will post a message on their Facebook profile and the KFP Fan Page, explaining why he/she chooses to be free of alcohol tobacco and other drugs.
- Each message will include a brief explanation of the campaign and ask others to post the message on their profile as well.
- Ideally, the message will spread and anyone who logs onto Facebook during the month of April will see that most Kansas youth are making healthy choices and saying “no,” to negative peer pressure.
- The intent is to have everyone post a message stating why they are drug-free and encourage their friends and family to do so as well.
Positive Charge will be promoted through Kansas Family Partnership’s Facebook Page; Twitter account; YouTube station; via e-mail; and on the Kansas Family Partnership Web site.
