Red Ribbon Campaign

Red Ribbon Week: October 23-31, 2007
The Red Ribbon campaign provides a major force for raising awareness and mobilizing communities in the fight against drugs through its annual Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31. Since 1995, Kansas Family Partnership has enlisted thousands of Kansans to join in the fight against the illegal use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Red Ribbon Week is a time when communities come together to present a united and visible commitment toward the creation of a drug-free America.

Red Ribbon History

Enrique "Kiki" Camarena

In 1985, a Drug Enforcement Agent named Enrique "Kiki" Camarena was murdered. Kiki was very close to uncovering the identities of key members of a Mexican drug cartel. He was kidnapped and killed just days before he was to identify these kingpins of illegal drug trafficking in Mexico.

Enrique's death enraged many Americans, and people in his hometown of Calexico, California began wearing red ribbons in his memory. The red ribbon symbolized Kiki's sacrifice to prevent loss of life from drug use. Local parent groups across the nation joined in honoring Kiki by wearing red ribbons and in 1988, the National Family Partnership and its affiliated organizations began to wear Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to fight the illegal use of drugs.

In 1988, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, began distributing red ribbons that promoted "Toward a Drug Free Kansas." In 1990, a local Topeka coalition, the Topeka Drug Awareness Coalition (TDAC), became the Kansas affiliate for the National Family Partnership. This volunteer group promoted the National Red Ribbon Campaign statewide through small grants and big hearts. The campaign began to grow, and in 1995, the coordination of the Red Ribbon Campaign was transferred to the Kansas Family Partnership.

Since 1995, KFP has enlisted thousands of Kansans to join in the fight against the illegal use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Each year, the Red Ribbon Campaign provides a major force for raising awareness and mobilizing communities in the fight against drugs.

How Can I Get Involved?

Red Ribbon Training

Each year, KFP sponsors Red Ribbon Training for over 200 Kansas youth and adults. This one-day training program is designed to create awareness, build coalitions and support healthy, drug-free lifestyles. It provides the catalyst for schools, businesses, parents, churches, law enforcement, doctors, government, social service organizations and others to join together to promote effective prevention messages throughout their communities.

The Annual Red Ribbon Training will be held Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at the Kansas Army National Guard Training Center, 2930 Scanlan Ave., Salina, Kansas.
